My Story

Ursula | age 79
Lexington, VA
12 years since her MammoSite treatment.

In March of 2007 I went for my yearly mammogram. The report came back saying that it was highly suspicious for carcinoma. My doctor called after she received her report and referred me to Blue Ridge Breast Care Specialists in Salem, VA. The doctor was C. Alan Henry. He gave me every test that goes along with Stage 1 Breast Cancer. MRI, CT Scan, Lung X-Rays, PET SCAN, and Bone Scan. When all was clear I was sent to Dr. Fintell, an oncologist who put me on Femara. I then had my operation to remove the tumor in June, and then MammoSite radiation. I opted for this because of the convenience, since we live an hour away from the nearest hospital. We have a friend who lives in the city and he offered his home for resting in-between treatments. It was a good experience for me since I could even have my husband in watching with the doctors as I received my treatment. The hard part was walking around with the catheters for l0 days. I have an idea for a bra to help the comfort level. I just sewed a pocket in the bra on the side of the cancer and tucked in the catheter. It helped keep it in place. I will talk to anyone that wants to listen to my story. My husband and I went to Italy for three weeks in October!
