My Story

Sue | age 80
Retired Teacher
Mukwonago, WI
16 years, 1 month since her MammoSite treatment.

My name is Sue, wife of Dave for 45 years, mom of 4, grandma of 7, and retired 5th grade teacher in Mukwonago, WI. Since the birth of my first child in 1962, I’ve always been careful to have my yearly physicals. Going in for a mammogram had become routine and not a source of concern…at least not until 3 and half years ago in July of 2003.

That yearly mammogram revealed a very tiny spot of concern and the doctor who read it really had “eagle eyes” because it was hard to see. As you readers know, this began a chain of events that were pretty scary…the sterotactic biopsy, consultations with the surgeon, the radiation oncologist, and dealing with my fear…how can this be happening? I breast fed all 4 of my babies! I’m careful to have my annual checks…BUT, I’ve been on hormone replacement!

Our visit with Doctors J.C. Jones and Chris Davies revealed an option my husband and I had never heard of. Along with the fact that my cancer was small and the experience and background of those two doctors, we decided on the MammoSite. So, on July 14, 2003, I had the lumpectomy and the insertion of the MammoSite. After a few days of recovery, Dr. Jones did a CT scan, I visited Dr. Davies, and radiation was scheduled. For 5 days, I had radiation which targeted the site of the cancer, at 8:30 am and 2:30 pm. By Friday, my car almost drove to Waukesha Memorial Hospital by itself! On that day, the MammoSite was removed.

Now, I would see a 3rd doctor, Dr. Paul LeMarbe, who would monitor my progress. With the knowledge and expertise of these 3 outstanding physicians, I’m cancer free and feeling great, exercising, substitute teaching, enjoying my family and traveling a lot with my husband.
