My diagnosis was invasive ductal carcinoma. I was devastated. I had been diagnosed with colon cancer 5 years earlier so I was well aware of how surgery, treatment and recovery can turn your world upside down.
I met with my surgeon Dr. William Haun. We agreed that a lumpectomy and radiation were my best options. He then talked to me about MammoSite and the reasons I was a good candidate. Thank God for small breasts that day.
He sent me to see Dr. Kevin Schewe, who would be my radiation oncologist, for further details. It really was a no-brainer for me. Twice a week for 5 days and be done with it? Absolutely!
I personally experienced some discomfort when the catheter was implanted to begin treatment. I understand however that most people don’t. I was encouraged to drive myself to my treatments and it was a breeze. When my final treatment was over the removal of the catheter was completely painless. If I had to I would make the same choice again.
One of the doctors I met during this time referred to the experience as the “Cancer Train”. It is a journey you take with many stops along the way but no set time for when you will end your ride. I wish you all the best on your journey.
