My Story

Mary | age 55
Paralegal
La Habra, CA
10 years, 5 months since her MammoSite treatment.

I have been a single mother of 2 for 14 years. My breast cancer was confirmed after a core biopsy on May 11, 2007 followed by surgery on May 22, 2007. Prior to surgery my breast doctor, Dr. McCoy at St. Jude, gave me some insight about MammoSite and its benefits. I met with my radiation doctor, Dr. Lee, also at St. Jude. He provided further information about MammoSite and how I could possibly qualify for the procedure. I was totally elated that instead of 6 1/2 weeks of radiation, I could take advantage of this new technology that would provide the same benefits as external beam radiation with less time and effort. I had my surgery on Tuesday afternoon, May 22 and the MammoSite was inserted on May 25. My treatments started on May 29 (May 28 was a holiday) and ended on June 4, where Dr. Lee took the balloon out after my afternoon treatment. Each treatment took about 4 to 5 minutes with careful scanning prior to each treatment and special dressing after. I had very little amount of drainage during the whole time.

The small hole left on my breast is almost unnoticeable.

I am feeling very good now and keeping a positive attitude, I am back to my regular work both at home and at the office.
