My Story

Marlene | age 67
San Jose, CA
12 years, 1 month since her MammoSite treatment.

My name is Marlene; Iím 55 years of age and have been married to my husband Dale for 35 years. We have 2 daughters and 6 handsome grandsons, ages 12, 4, 3, twins 2, and 1. In June of 2006 I went for my annual mammogram and a few weeks later was informed I had a tumor. I started doing all the tests and ultrasounds and they confirmed it was cancer. I then set up an appointment with a surgeon and discussed all my options. I was told the tumor was very small but deep and it was in stage ď1.Ē I was scared but optimistic knowing the tumor was small. I was very lucky that the tumor was even spotted this early. Thank God the radiologist spotted the tumor when she did. When it came down to surgery I had the choice of a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. I chose lumpectomy because I wanted to keep my breast if possible. At this time I was also told by my surgeon about a new procedure called MammoSite, which I was very interested in and that I might be a candidate for it. To me it means only having 5 days of radiation and not weeks, and to me that meant getting on with my life a lot sooner and back to my family and grandchildren. On August 21, 2006 I had my surgery as an outpatient where they removed the tumor and inserted the MammoSite balloon. I never had any pain or any side effects and started my MammoSite radiation 1 week later and in 5 days was done. I felt relieved and was able to continue on with everyday normal activity. The following week we went on a trip to Disneyland with 3 of our grandsons and I never got tired like I thought I might get.

To sum it all up, I never had any pain or side effects, and no burning of the skin area, just a little pink. I was so thankful for the opportunity to get through the surgery and radiation quickly and with less stress. Now Iím taking Arimidex and have had no side effects, again Iím very lucky. I was interviewed on TV with our local news station about the MammoSite Treatment about 1 month after treatment.

I highly recommend MammoSite Radiation for anyone that is a candidate; it was less stress and meant getting on with life so much sooner for my family and myself. If you can be done with treatments in 5 days instead of weeks itís a beautiful thing.
