My Story

Maralyn | age 75
Retired Teacher
Williston, FL
13 years, 2 months since her MammoSite treatment.

It was mid-July 2006, when I went for my yearly mammogram. I was to have not only the mammogram, but also an ultrasound of my breasts due to the fact that my gynecologist and I had noticed a marked change in one of the fibroid lumps in my breast.

After the tests were both complete, the radiologist came into the room and told me that my mammogram showed nothing, but the ultrasound showed something suspicious and that I would need to have a needle biopsy done as well.

A week later my doctor called to tell me the news - I had breast cancer and would have to have surgery.

I had just retired from 39 years of teaching 2 months earlier thinking that life would be wonderful and now I was facing cancer surgery!

After falling apart for a short period of time, my husband and I prayed about the situation and immediately sought to expedite seeing the surgeon and having the actual surgery done.

During my consultation with Dr. Jamie Daniel, my surgeon, I was given the option of a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. After deciding on the lumpectomy, she informed me that I might be a candidate for MammoSite 5-day Targeted Radiation Therapy. A short time later it was decided that, Yes, I was a candidate for the treatment and what a blessing and answer to prayer that turned out to be.

I feel truly blessed to have been a patient for which MammoSite 5-day Targeted Radiation Therapy was an option. Having gone through the therapy, I would recommend it to anyone who qualifies. Not only was the length of the time in treatment shortened, the lasting results are much better as well, in that the treatment was given only to the area where the cancer had been located and not the entire section of my body. I was also blessed in that I did not have to go through chemotherapy.

I trust that my story can, in some way, help others who find themselves in the same situation I did. Just as my gynecologist told me on the day of that fateful phone call, “Don’t cancel your magazine subscriptions!” For you see, finding out that you have breast cancer is not necessarily saying that you do not have many years ahead in which to enjoy life.
