My Story

11 years, 1 month since her MammoSite treatment.

I felt the lump in my right breast but went into denial. You see, I had a lump removed from my left breast in 1999 and it turned out to be full of water and nothing else. I was hoping this was going to be the same type of thing. I let the holidays go by and finally decided I had to know for sure. After a mammogram and an ultrasound, I was sent to see Dr. Hernandez, a surgeon. He next ordered a needle biopsy. On March 20th, Dr. Hernandez told me it was malignant and I had cancer. He next told me all about this new procedure called MammoSite and since my cancer was Stage 1, I was a good candidate for this, and that it was an excellent way to deal with it as swiftly as possible. On March 21st I had a partial mastectomy and a sample balloon was put in for the radiation treatments to come (MammoSite.) A week later, I had to go back into the hospital because the sample balloon was not in the right position more tissue needed to be removed. I found out that day that there was no cancer in my lymph nodes thank God! On March 30th, Dr. Hernandez put in a new balloon and on March 31st, Dr. Olyejar, the radiologist, said it was in the perfect position for the radiation treatment. On April 3rd, I had the first radiation treatment at 5:45am. Then I came back at 12 noon for the second treatment. This went on for a total of five days and I was done. On April 10th, the balloon came out and I felt just fine. Dr. Nabong, my oncologist, gave me a 65% chance the cancer would not return but if I did chemo he would give me 15-20% more. I thought long and hard but finally on May 16th I started chemo and finished August 29th. I love life and would love to be able to see great-grandchildren. Its been a long, hard road but every day is a blessing from God! MammoSite was my blessing and my greatest hope at the time when it was needed most. Everyone needs to be aware of this procedure because its easy, and will save lives.
