11 years, 9 months since her MammoSite treatment.

I was 43 in June of 2007. I had gone every year for a mammogram since I was 37. This time I knew something was different. I had several mammograms and then was asked to stay for an ultrasound. The following Monday my OB/GYN called and told me I needed to see a surgeon for a biopsy. She recommended Dr. Petraiuolo from our local hospital. I had to wait about two weeks, for the first available appointment they had. He suggested I try a "core biopsy" due to the fact that calcium deposits had grown but I had no tumor or lump. It came back with the result of non-invasive intraductal cancer. I now had to have the full needle biopsy. I went approximately two weeks later for the surgery. The area affected was so small that we were confident I could now move on to the MammoSite radiation. When my biopsy results came back they found one very tiny spot of uncontained cancer, therefore I had to have another surgery to try to create a clearer margin of tissue around the site. I had to wait approximately another month to let the surgery heal and went back to try again. This time was a success. I thought I was ready to roll. The night before I thought my ice pack had ruptured but unfortunately it was my incision. I had developed an infection and now had to wait for it to heal and go thru a round of antibiotics. Finally I started my radiation. I was terrified, I had waited almost 4 months to try to finish this nightmare and was a nervous wreck. I had to go to a different hospital because our hospital did not have the equipment for the MammoSite procedure, which added to my stress. After the first treatment I couldn't believe how easy it was!! 5 days later I was done, my balloon was removed and all my incisions began to heal. I just went for the first mammogram after my surgery and it came back fine. I would definitely recommend the MammoSite procedure for anyone able to do so. I was 43 years old, married to a wonderful man and had a 17 year-old daughter and I thought I was going to lose it all. How lucky I was to have a wonderful surgeon and that he knew about the MammoSite procedure and was able to coordinate all of this for me.
