My Story

Barb | age 75
semi-retired Prof. Dog Groomer
Unionville, MO
9 years, 8 months since her MammoSite treatment.

I delayed having a mammogram for about 3 years, and then decided I better have one. I thought nothing was ever wrong before so it's probably negative again anyway. I had no lumps anywhere so I was fine, I thought. Well, there were what appeared to be calcium deposits in the duct that were grouped close together so my doctor was suspicious and called me into his office. He wanted to do a needle biopsy, so I consented and had it done. When I was called to his office and he said it showed cancer, I was in shock! I was in denial and said there must be some mistake. My mother never had cancer or my grandmother, but my Aunt did have a radical mastectomy years ago. I broke down and cried a lot, then the doctor wanted to do a lumpectomy and take the sentinel lymph nodes

I had the lumpectomy and the sentinel nodes were negative, but a trace of the cancer was in the lump of tissue and had gone to the edge, which was not good. Then he spoke about 6 weeks of radiation therapy. He said it was the usual regimen after diagnosis. I did not want that! So I talked to several friends and got opinions. I decided to see three Oncologists before I made my decision. One doctor told me an option was MammoSite. I went home and found information about MammoSite on the internet. WOW did that sound like the way to go. I had 5 days of radiation, 10 treatments twice a day for 10 minutes for me, totally painless treatments. I am now on Arimidex and Boniva with no side effects except muscle pain in my legs which I take a couple of Aleve at bedtime and it helps. I am so glad I had this procedure done and would recommend it to every woman who is a candidate for MammoSite. I have a very strong faith in God and believe that He was definitely with me through all of this. I believe in prayer and that my prayers were answered. I only have a couple of very small scars, no pain, discoloration or burn at all. I tell all women to have regular mammograms because you never know if you have cancer, since there are no lumps with ductal carcinoma. Mine was caught early and I'm so glad!
