My Story

Anna | age 71
Retired
Randleman, NC
9 years since her MammoSite treatment.

On the morning of April 14, 2008 I was doing a routine self-examination and I found a lump on my left breast. This was different from any others I had felt before.

On April 24 I had my annual physical and my gynecologist immediately made an appointment for an MRI on May 9. On May 16 I had a biopsy and ultrasound done and on May 19 my gynecologist, Dr. Michelle Grawall, called to tell me that I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Grade 2 early stage cancer. In my heart I knew all along that it would be cancer, I have a family history of cancer and my sister is a 20-year survivor. Alleluia!

I was recommended to Dr. David Carr, a well-known and respected surgeon. On my first visit he made me feel very at ease. He explained to my wonderful husband and me about the early stage cancer and he wanted me to go see a radiation oncologist; Dr. Ann McCunniff. She was great; she gave me several options of treatment. She also said that after a conference with Dr. Carr that I was a perfect candidate for MammoSite. She explained the procedure step by step and o course this treatment was based also on the outcome of my surgery. I chose MammoSite over 6-7 weeks of conventional therapy.

On June 9, 2008 I had surgery. On June 11 after a test was done on the lymph nodes (negative, thank God), Dr. Carr inserted the MammoSite catheter and thatís same day I started my first radiation treatment! On June 18, 2008 I had my last@

I felt guilty that it was so easy with no side effects. I had met so many other patients that had a much longer battle with it. I wish them all the best.

On July 9, 2008 I had an appointment with my medical oncologist Dr. Nick Chrysson and I was told that no further treatment was needed and he would see me n 3 months.

As I write this, it has already been five months and 21 days since that dreadful morning. I am blessed with wonderful doctors and very supportive family and friends. Most of all I have faith in God and my life is in His hands.
